This clearly predicts livestock emaciation and long distance treks in search of water and pasture. Milk and meat production will automatically decline and the income earned from it respectfully.

In February 2022, short rains harvest is expected to be up to 70% below average following the poor and significantly delayed short rains in semi- arid agricultural areas. In those areas most crops are expected to reach maturity. This will greatly constraint food availability. Poor households are increasingly dependent on non-agricultural waged labor opportunities, firewood and charcoal sales, and petty trade to bridge income deficits and support market purchases. Poor households are also relying on humanitarian assistance from national and local governments, NGOs, and school meal programs to minimize food gaps.

Climate change is the main driver of the erratic and recurring droughts, and has been partly attributed to gradual deforestation in Kenya, causing widespread food insecurity. Climate change also contributes to poor health outcomes.

We must prepare for future climate emergencies, with communities given financial support and decision-making power. Local leaders (particularly indigenous populations), smallholder farmers and livestock herders already have the knowledge and experience necessary to confront this crisis. Diversification of economy remains the major tabled solution accompanied with other factors like afforestation, soil and water conservation, change of traditional diets and more investment in the agricultural sector’s key areas such research and mechanization. Either climatic incorporation is gradual and demanding process. Everyone should play a decisive role in it.

And the next question which arises after this meal related prescription is the availability and the cost of the fruit. It narrows down to desire which does not create demand. A gap leaving no fruits’ wedges on the table. Just a desire.

In the beginning of the year 2021 His Grace Martin Kivuva induced an initiative of cultivating Red swit Dwarf Pawpaw within the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa jurisdiction and outside. He managed to issue seedlings to respective Archdiocese owned farms for planting. At least He issued 8000 seedlings. One of the lucky farms to be a reception of the seedlings was Tumaini Farm 1 in machanzuni Lungalunga. One thousand trees were planted in it.

Most of the trees survived harsh weather conditions through continuous irrigation as water scarcity has been a challenge . Either a catastrophe leaving many farmers frustrated. That farmers did endure the dry seasons and there pawpaw trees did bear fruits. A sign of hope for a balanced diet on every persons dinning table. It is a call upon everyone to strive within their available space and create a fruit garden

Also it is significant gateway to many in and out of Africa. Despite of the population concentration in the beautiful city, there are still hotspots where interactions are heightened compared to others. One of those places is the iconic and strategic Kongowea Market. A market which serves the whole of Coastal Kenya. Every minute a hundred of people are interacting in the market, increasing the risk of infection for the whole city.

Grocery business is an involving activity. People from all over the country flock there to either trade or purchase goods of interest. Without persistent caution our essential merchants would be infected and the trail would find its way to our homes. All of us will be infected or victims.

Catholic Archdiocese through Caritas Mombasa department identified the lack of intense awareness amongst merchants. They planned the activity through respective stakeholders and ended up implementing it in the most applicable way. Market members were issued with relief face masks and pocket sanitizers. Also emphasis was made on how to avoid unnecessary infection through maintaining social distance, washing hands frequently and continuous wearing of face masks

It is a collective effort and initiative if there is a chance of doing away with Covid-19 pandemic. Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa calls upon everyone in protecting the society from infection.

Lets assume that this statement has some truth. The “Nurture ” taking shape because of efforts, hard work, research, knowledge and studies. Typically this what is happening in Godo Lungalunga; farmers going depths in search of sustainable water sources.

As per reports from ministry of agriculture, the consumption of locally produced food is high and the major challenge is to sustain the supply. A task committed to the local farmers . They have been trying their best but the major challenge being water as they experience two wet rain seasons a year. Dependence on rainfall has been disappointing and frustrating most of the times.

A solution to their problem has been through the establishment of water pan and well around. Now some a capable of growing crops continuously all year round.

Farmers who planted crops in the previous rain season were unable to harvest as expected since rainfalls fell short. Now they can’t plant and they need food. The elderly are surviving at the mercy of the young and children are almost going a day with just one meal or neither. A devastating moment indeed. There is a need for well wishers to respond immediately. A need of saving lives.

Besides the physical direct donations, trainings and provision of relevant materials to counter may add more advantage and empower locals to respond accordingly or erase completely hunger emergencies in the region.

Caritas Mombasa with the help of the region agriculture extensional officers has been able to train farmers on chicken rearing and distributed them with eight weeks old chicks. This was labeled as one of the best measures of dealing with the ongoing infamous famine.

80% of world cargo is moved through the sea. People may be wondering who are seafarers? They are people who are employed to work on a marine vessel. Their profession of choice bears isolation characteristics and when mired with long time in the sea it induces home longing. Staying at sea without seeing your family is a sacrifice our seafarers all over the world make to ensure we are able to get what we need.

It is a bit difficult to appreciate everyone of them personally rather appreciating the work they do is all matters. We Stella Maris through prayer and frequent interactions, have chosen to journey with them as they carry out this noble work
